Coreboot for AMD StarFighter

A first beta for the AMD StarFighter Mk I and Mk II, with more firmware control and a few important limitations to know about.

This one has been a long time coming.

The coreboot beta for Phoenix is now available for the AMD StarFighter Mk I and Mk II. After far too much digging through AMD firmware, comparing against AMI and fixing the next thing that broke, we finally have something you can try.

Release status — please read before installing

The installation commands below describe the planned release flow. The PHX updater and AMI return image are not live yet. Do not run these commands until the release is published.

What do you get?

A proper firmware setup menu, including control over the haptic trackpad. If the default click isn't quite right for you, change it.

What is still being worked on?

This is still a beta. Some features are not yet at parity with AMI.

Suspend

Suspend currently uses s2idle; S3 is not enabled.

USB-C display output

USB-C display output remains an open item.

Need either of these features? If you depend on S3 suspend or USB-C display output, stick with AMI for now.

Installing the beta

Draft instructions only. The PHX updater and AMI return image are not live yet. Do not run the commands below until the release is published.

  1. This beta is for the AMD StarFighter only, not the Intel versions.
  2. Connect the charger, charge the battery to at least 30%, save your work and close your applications.
  3. From AMI, run the updater with the beta option:
Planned command — do not run yet
    curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/StarLabsLtd/firmware/refs/heads/main/updater.sh | bash -s -- --coreboot-switch --set-mirror-flag

The updater checks the prerequisites. If it asks you to change a firmware setting, do that and run it again.

  4. Wait for the update to finish. The --set-mirror-flag option makes the updater set the EC mirror flag and shut down. Leave the charger connected, then press the power button to finish the update.

Already on coreboot 26.05 or later? Use the signed F2-A.cap capsule instead of the flashrom updater.

Switching back to AMI

The planned release flow also includes a way to return to standard AMI firmware.

  1. Connect the charger, make sure the battery is at least 30%, and save your work.
  2. Run the same updater, without --coreboot-switch:
Planned command — do not run yet
    curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/StarLabsLtd/firmware/refs/heads/main/updater.sh | bash -s -- --set-mirror-flag

This selects the standard AMI firmware rather than the coreboot beta. Follow any instructions it displays before flashing.

  3. Wait for the update to finish. The --set-mirror-flag option makes the updater set the EC mirror flag and shut down. Leave the charger connected, then press the power button to finish the update.
  4. Check you are back on AMI:
    cat /sys/class/dmi/id/bios_vendor

It should report American Megatrends rather than coreboot.
